WEEKEND RECAP: CAPS TAKE THREE AGAINST THE IMPS

With the ice out at Landon Arena, the Capitals took to the road for eight games against division opponents. The team will return home for a series this weekend after going 7-1-0 including a three-game sweep of the Sugar Land Imperials this past weekend.

On Friday night the Capitals asserted themselves early and often, scoring five unaswered goals with the fifth (and eventual game winner) coming at 5:23 in the second courtesy of Hank Roers who was assisted by Drew Kelly and Steve MacIver. The Imperials would score four goals of their own the rest of the way, including the games final two, but the Capitals continued to ramp up the pressure by matching each one on the way to a 9-4 victory.

Saturday's game was a tighter affair that saw Sugar Land take their first lead of the series with two goals early in the second period to make it 2-1. The Capitals would go on to score the next five points, starting with a pair of power play goals (by Tre Opack and Alex Sauer respectively) and the game winner by Alex Johanson in the closing moments of the second period to claim the series with a 6-3 win.

In game three, it looked like the Imperials had finally broken through against the Caps after taking a 4-1 lead heading into the third period. But Topeka would not be outdone. The Capitals netted goals from Opack, Sauer, and Tre Kautzman to send the game into overtime. In the extra frame, MacIver would close out the sweep and the road trip with an unassisted score, securing a 4-3 final.

The Caps are back this weekend with two games against the St. Louis Junior Blues on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Tickets are only $5 and parking is free. For more information about upcoming games, call 785-286-PUCK or go to www.topekacapitals.com.
